Since they folded, I still test out probably 5 - 10 distros a year, hoping to find something simple and friendly to use, and easy to update. What a pleasant surprise when
I began using PEACH OSI. Typically I have a Windows installation, and an install of PCLOS, and Linux Mint (Mate). In my opinion PEACH OSI is the BEST Linux distro I have ever
Peach Netbook

To be honest with you our netbook hasn't been all that useful except for taking with us on a trip just to have something along that could check email and maybe look for a restaurant along the way. Then we got smart phones and the darn thing just became a shelf ornament. It was painfully slow and - well - need I say more? I noticed the blurb on another PC that runs Peach about the release of Peach Netbook. I thought I would give it a try because I like Peach on my main computer. HOLLY CRAP!! My old netbook is now a fully functioning PC. I can't believe the difference over the Windows version that was pre-installed on it. I can't say that I'd ever trash my main PC for this netbook but I will say that it is truly worth having with me now. Thanks so much... Up to now I have not donated to the Peach projects. But a donation is on its way and it is well deserved. I have a 5 year old that as soon as Peach for Kids is available I plan to load up a dual boot on my main PC and show him how to use. Thanks again...

Administrator: You are most welcome. I had one of those folding door stops laying around too. I always knew that they really weren't bad computers. They were just simply waiting for something to properly make use of their limited resources. Most Netbooks are more powerful than a smart phone. They were just never designed to run the more resource hungry operating systems that they were relegated to work with. Peach OSI Netbook gives the netbook back what it was meant for. A compact, fully functional resource available when you are away from your main PC. Your comments made my day...

Jim

P.S. Thank you again for the donation....

What a great Xmas/New Year 2017 present you've given us

With all of these new Peach 16.04 releases. I am using a Netbook for Peach TV, to play movies. The SmartTV does all of the processing power, the old netbook just transmits the video to the TV though Wi-Fi. So instead of having a brick laying around the house, we have something that has become useful. Speaking of which, I traveled to be with the family for the holidays. My mother gave me an old HP laptop with an Intel Centrino Duo processor and 1GB RAM that was all but abandoned some years ago. I gave it new life by adding 4GB RAM and installing Peach OSI 64-Bit 16.04 BareBones, and that's where I am writing this from. It handles the HD 1080p videos ok, either from YouTube or VLC. Even my 4mo. baby child had some laughs watching some cartoons from the old laptop.
And then finally, I got a a new desktop upgrade at the office. The first thing I did? format the PC erasing the included Win10 and put Peach OSI 64-Bit BB. Smooth performance! I'm satisfied.

Have a great 2017 and best wishes to you and your loved ones!
Ed.

Security and Updates?

Hi - great OS and enjoying the appreciable increase in speed over KDE.

Just one concern. When I first started updating in response to notifications that updates were available, I was required to enter my password. That now seems to have stopped? I have installed updates on at least 5-6 occasions in the last couple of weeks and never once been asked for my PW.

BTW - If I use Synaptic instead of your Update software I *always* get asked for my PW even if it is a single lib file. I know that various update programmes actually use Synaptic in the background. Not sure if this is the case here, but I wonder if Synaptic is there somewhere why there is no PW request.

I am not logged in as root or anything like that.

Commendation for PeachOsi & request GPARTED & EVOLUTION

I am a long time user of Linux, including many years with Ubuntu as my desktop of choice. I have continually looked for an alternative since the move to Unity, which to me added an unnecessary graphical load and lost a lot of great tools provided by Gnome. PeachOSI appears to have resolved many of my concerns, in providing a more efficient operating environment which is still attractive and intuitive. It brings together many useful tools from Gnome and other development groups. Including a comprehensive set of graphical tools to enable individuals to readily tailor the desktop and user inteface to their personal preference. Two programs I missed are GPARTED and EVOLUTION. Please, add GPARTED to "Barebones" & "The Works". While EVOLUTION probably only needs to be in "The Works" as a great eMail client. Other packages I recommend: InkScape ~ a vector graphic program akin to Corel Draw (it compliments Gimp's raster graphics). Libre Project ~ Project Management program akin to MS Project. Libre Plan ~ Project Management package using Web interface.

Administrator: Hi Gary. Thank you for the accolades and the suggestions. When developing Peach we took careful consideration of just what applications that we wanted preinstalled in each flavor. Careful consideration was made to try to keep each flavor of Peach as small of a download as possible while at the same time giving the respective user some of the most common tools that they might need or want to use directly "out of the box - so to speak". We also had to consider what proprietary ramifications any particular application might have. Any piece of software that required a user acceptance of any policy concerns could not be preinstalled for obvious reasons. But as with any Linux offering, there is always the ability to install whatever application that the user prefers to use. I trust that you can understand the reasoning as I've stated above. The applications that you have suggested are truly great ones and for many users they would be an immediate utility option if preinstalled.

Peach has great speed due to XFCE, now for a FULL version?

Peach OSI. as noted has great speed, even better looks & lots of features.

Which all is great for middle of the road computers. However there's those of of who has hundreds, of not thousands of dollars invested into hardware, many of who doesn't want to play with XFCE, but rather a Full version, like Ubuntu 14.04/Linux MInt 17 MATE/Cinnamon/KDE, as well as others.

Does Peach OSI intend on releasing a Full version package? Something that can make a 4 or 6 core i7 actually break a sweat? While there are many 'middle of the road' computers that can benefit from the XFCE package, and it's good to have that, there are others who wants a 'heavyweight' OS.

Nothing ticks me off more than seeing 0% CPU usage & less than 1GB out of 32GB total being used. Looks good for bragging rights, but many of us are not that, it would be great to have a non-XFCE edition released for those of us who has the Harley-Davidson equivalent of computers.

Administrator:: LOL... My dear, dear misguided computer enthusiast. It seems that you lack the knowledge to understand what the function of an operating system is. It is "not" the operating system's job to tickle your diodes and raise your temperatures. It is but the operating system's job to create a gateway between the hardware on your machine and its brain - the CPU. In order to do that properly it has to "know" what hardware you have and make all of that glorious memory and cores and whatever else that you decide to connect to the same and make it all available to you - the user. Not any operating system - from Yosemite to Sky OS - can by itself tax your hardware. I have many computers running everything from 1 core to 8 cores with memory as little as 512K all the way to 128GB so I know how you hunger for the open road. But even with the most powerful engine in that Harley of yours it's completely useless unless you know how and when to apply all that power. That word apply is key. From it we get the word applications. So if you want to feel the wind in your hair when you crank up your Harley I think that you'll definitely feel the vibration once you crank up with Peach. You've already said as much. But after booting up it is up to you to find that open road to your computing bliss. It's up to you to decide what that might entail. Perhaps a game, perhaps multitasking your way to a fine web based corporation. Or perhaps just sitting there typing out email to people like me trying to figure out what to do with that Harley you built. It's a big world out there. Where you go from here is up to you.

Thanks for your answer. I found the problem was with Grub Customizer's handling of the grub list on my first distro (not Peach). Even though I had erased the old Peach partition and installed a later version in the same place, the grub customizer had assigned the new version to the old Peach grub description as well as a second listing of new version as a generic. Once I realized this, I simply had to name the two new Peach entries properly and delete the old one to get the proper setup of the "recovery" entry. I have five linux distros on this computer + Windows and simply didn't realize what grub-customizer had done. So all is well now. Love Peach, think it's the very best 14.04 based remix out there, bar none. It just works.

Still impressed about Peach OSI's speed and stability

I've been using Peach OSI for more than a month now, and I am very happy with it. In fact it is now my main distro to go, either for work or for fun. The Xfce desktop environment is IMHO the fastest and more practical to use. It looks good too, specially with Envolvere icons installed. I haven't missed Linux Mint much (used to be my favorite distro) or SolydX (another good one). I just installed some other much needed programs like mintstick to have a more comfortable OS. Peach OSI needs to be mentioned more in general, it is that good. Thanks again for a wonderful OS.

Sincerely, Ed.

Very good work with Peach OSI

I am mostly a devoted Linux Mint user, and I've tried many Linux distributions, preferring the ones which are more practical, user friendly and have good looks as well. I have to say that Peach OSI is very well design with user friendliness in mind, and is a very complete operating system as well. Peach OSI is unique in that you can reach your favorite programs from at least for ways possible (five if you install the excellent and handy Synapse). The 32-bit Netbook Edition runs very well on my Acer Netbook from 2009, much smoother than other light distros I've tried (Linux Mint Xfce, Peppermint OS, LXLE, SolydX). It also feels more like a complete system on the limited sized screen and hardware of a netbook. I also installed "The Works" edition at my work's PC on a portable HDD so I get the job done without glitches or delays. I can highly recommend this fine OS to intermediate users or new users who are just getting to know the benefits and qualities of Linux. This OS has everything you need to get to work or play right away. Sincerely, Ed.

P.S. A BIG thank you to the developer who works hard on the project, it shows! I will look to help contribute to keep this project going.

Administrator: Thank you for your comments Ed.. Never think that any comment goes unnoticed or unappreciated. It is people like you that make all the hard work worth while.

I'm new to linux and I've finally setted on Peach OSI. I've installed it on an old laptop and it runs better than it ever did. So far I'm very happy with Peach OSI and may replace the mint version that I now use on my main computer. My old printer just died and I need to replace it. I'd like to replace it with an All-in-One so I'm looking for suggestions on which All-in-One printers seem to work properly with Peach OSI & Linux in general. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Administrator: Hi Elwood and thank you for your comments. I have pre-loaded CUPS (the software that makes printing possible in Linux systems) with every printer as of the last update issued on 10/01/2014 so as far as I know there should not be any issue with almost any printer that you can buy. Me personally I've always been partial to EPSON printers but there again, the choice is really up to you. If you are looking for a good commercial/office style printer that has a lot of features for not a whole lot of money I would do the Workforce models of Epson. I have an Epson Workforce WF-7510 and it is fast and works great on Peach and is seay to setup. But this is a big printer capable of paper sizes up to 16" in length and 11" in width. You might not need one for such large paper sizes but it does give you a good example of what Peach OSI can handle.

I do appreciate your kind comments too. Thanks again. If I can ever be of any further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask.... Jim

system install and use

I had some initial trouble with install from a flash made with unetbootin. When I did an install the desktop wasn't the same as on the flash drive and I couldn't connect to wifi. After doing a system update to the flash drive I had no trouble with the install and wifi worked fine. I like this system much better than Unity lens and my wife likes it better. The only issue I have had since I started using it is in laptop sleep mode. When In open my HP Pavilion the password prompt is there, I type it in and get a blank screen. Once I shut down the computer, restart and log in everything is fine. I am very impressed with Peach so far and find it to be the first distro I have tried in the last six years that made me move from stock Ubuntu. I will try as a long term user to keep sharing my experiences to help others in any way I can. Keep up the great work, this system seems much better for the average user who just wants an easy user interface.

Administrator: Thank you for your comments. I can't really speak to your problems coming out of the sleep mode. I need to know if you were in sleep mode from the flash drive or your HDD. If you were on your hard drive then make sure that you created a Swap partition. Peach OSI sets up a partition automatically from the standard installation but some opt to partition the HDD in different ways... Glad that overall you like Peach OSI. To anyone else reading this ... Try creating your USB bootable drive with Yumi Multiboot. Peach OSI is one of Yumi Multiboot's approved Distros and appears on the list of OS's. You can google Yumi Multiboot to find and download it for free.

I've downloaded, burned, and gave it a very complete checkout-over 3 hours running the LiveDVD. What a GREAT job you people did. It is a very comprehensive operating system, and IMHO, one of the best, if not the best, Linux OS', I have ever used. Positively, the BEST artwork. As I am so used to the MATE desktop, I will download that and see how it performs with Peach. Many, many THANKS to Jim Carpenter.

Administrator: My pleasure Mr. Simms.. Glad we got you up and running...

First...I LOVE this new OS!

Patrick sent a message using the contact form at http://www.peachosi.com/contact.

First...I LOVE this new OS! Beautiful fast stable! I was using briefly Deepin 2014 and it has some very nice features I hope you can intertwine with future upgrades of this OS, however as it is Peach is awesome! Deepin was unstable if you make changes and install certain things. So Peach has won me over!

Love it!

In Deepin when you click the launcher and all of your apps pop out on the desktop is great but in Deepin it grayed out or foggy glass look out your desktop which made it great to see the apps. I see you have the launcher as well and it works great, I am one of those guys that likes to have icons on my desktop still, so when I click the launcher it is clear and I see all of my desktop icons as well and it makes it hard to see the apps. Can you fix this or create an option for transparency etc?

Also, I love the wallpapers but it does not let me choose any others except yours, so if I try to choose another wall paper from a another source it stays grayed out, any thoughts? I Love it and way to go for a first stable release!

I am a Huge Fan! it is my perm desktop OS! Thank You!!!! Patrick

Administrator: Hi and thank you for your comments, Patrick. First question, the backgrounds. There are several ways to change the backgrounds but the easiest way without using terminal is to first save your preferred images to your "Pictures" folder which is in your "username" folders. After you have the images that you want stored in your pictures folder, right click anywhere on the desktop and select the "Desktop Settings.." menu item. Once inside the desktop settings navigate the menus inside the application until you locate your "Pictures" folder. Select the folder and then your good to go.

Lastly, I will see what I can do to dim the desktop items when slingshot brings up the graphical menu but don't hold your breath. that won't be an easy one to change but I'll try... It already dims the background and entire desktop by a factor of 60%.

Thanks again.... glad you like the distro...

32 Bit OS

I have used Ubuntu for about 7 years and Linux Mint for 3. I wanted to try out a USB friendly distro and so far I'm very impressed. I won't put down other distros, but I will say that some of the recommended small distros were disappointing to say the least. I used unetbootin and made a live 8GB flash drive. I have only played with Peach for a couple of hours and I will be glad to say more about it in a week or two. For now though this seems to be a well thought out and well programmed OS. I hope to introduce others to it, especially those who are ready to try something not Microsoft or Apple. Thanks for the work you've done.

Administrator: Thanks for the vote of confidence. Today it really means a lot. If I can ever be of any assistance please don't hesitate to ask.

Quality Distro

I have worked with a large number of Linux distributions over the last 8 years, and this is a truly a gratifying one to use. There are many Linux users (and non-users) who would be pleased with Peach OSI if they could be introduced to it. I have some Linux friends that I plan on demonstrating my install to, and I sincerely hope to convince a few that they should install it and give it a fair trial. I am aware of "different strokes for different folks", but I have enough appreciation for art that I truly love the backgrounds. They are creations, not copies. Thank you for the fine work, anyone who doesn't like them probably wouldn't be interested in the Mona Lisa either.

Administrator: It is people such as yourself that make all the effort that I put into this project worthwhile. If I can ever be of any assistance to you or to your friends, please do not hesitate to ask....

I purchased the 16GB Flash

I purchased the 16GB Flash Drive and installed it on my HP Laptop and my ASUS Netbook . The installations on both were very fast and easy. I really like the speed and ease of use of Peach OSI. Will recommend!!!

Administrator: That's great! You didn't comment about using the Flash Drive to Live boot Peach OSI. In the event that you weren't aware that you could live boot Peach OSI (on just about any computer) the drive that you purchased has over 4 GB of persistent storage - meaning that you can store a lot of data, pictures, music - you name it - and always have those files with you anywhere that you go. All you need is a host computer to live boot Peach OSI.
