  • Hello and thanks for your interest in Peach OSI and your question.

In order to edit the actual menu you will need to go into the "Main Menu" application which is found in alphabetical order in the "Systems" category of the whisker menu. (Found by clicking on the "Applications" tab at your upper left while in Peach OSI. Once inside the "Main Menu" you can edit the menu anyway that you prefer. Be careful what you delete because once deleted it isn't so easy to get an application back on the Whisker menu. To remove an application from the menu simply untick the box beside the application you don't want in the menu. To move items up and down in the menu, highlight the application and select move up or move down from the options of your right. I set up all of the Whisker menu (as with all the other menus) in alphabetical order. Whatever you change in the "Main Menu" will be reflected in the other menus as well.

In the event that I didn't fully understand your question here is some more information that might prove helpful...

The Whisker Menu is an alternate application launcher for XFCE. When you open it you are shown a list of applications you have marked as favorites. You can browse through all of your installed applications by clicking on the category buttons on the side. Top level categories make browsing fast, and simple to switch between. Additionally, Whisker Menu keeps a list of the last ten applications that you’ve launched from it.

Favorites are easy to add and reorder. When browsing through your applications, right-click on any of them and select “Add to Favorites”. After you've selected items to your favorites list, simply drag and drop the items in your favorites list to arrange them to suit your preferences. You can remove them at any time from the favorites list with another right-click option while pointing your mouse at the menu item that you want to remove. You can also add applications to the desktop directly from the same right click.

If you’re not sure exactly where a program is listed, instead of browsing through each category you can simply enter a search term. The search field is focused when opening the menu, so you can just start typing. Application descriptions as well as names are searched, which allows you to find a program by using a general word (such as “browser” to find all web browsers installed on your computer).
  • HPLIP Systm Tray Icon

I have installed HPLIP for my HP Photosmart printer, and everything works fine except the HP system tray icon does not appear. I have configured it to appear, and I can access the toolbox from the menu, but I would prefer the icon in the tray, as that is where it appears in other Linux distributions that I have recently used. The command to start the tray service appears in Session and Startup, and it is running, just no icon in the tray. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, ~Richard

Hi Richard, Peach uses XFCE as it's window manager and when you install just about anything - nothing from the install will automatically appear in the bottom dock or the tray at the top. But not to worry, you can easily add any application to the bottom dock. Simply click on "Places" in the top menu, then click on "File System" in the pull down menu. Once in the filesystem navigate (click on the following folders), /usr/share/applications... You should now be seeing all the applications that are installed in your computer. They are in alphabetical order so scroll down until you see HPLIP or whatever program it is that runs your printer. Simply click on it with your left mouse button and hold down the button and drag it to the bottom dock or to the upper tray where ever you want it to appear. A window will popup asking you to confirm that you want to create a new launcher - confirm and you are good to go...

You can always right click on the icon and then select move from the pull down and move it if you don't place it where you want it the first time. Alternately you can right click on any icon in the applications folder and send a link to the application onto the desktop itself. If there is no program in the application folder for your HPLIP (which I doubt there isn't one) then let me know that too..

I hope this helps, Have a great day, Jim

    HPLIP Systm Tray Icon

Wow! How easy was that!! Thanks so much for the prompt help. I guess I was disturbed that the icon didn't appear in the system tray as it had with other Linuxes that I had been using, but I was unaware of that shortcoming in Xfce, and my experience lately has been mostly with Mate (Gnome2 fork). I am well aware that each desktop environment has its strengths and weaknesses, but I must admit that Mate has spoiled me pretty bad. However, with some help like you just gave me here, I know that Xfce will find its way into my heart. Many other users certainly love it very much. I am sure that the more I learn about it, the more I will like it. All in all, Peach OSI is a wonderful distribution, and I hope to use it for a long time. In fact, I'm going to make a donation right now. Thanks again, ~Richard

All smiles here too Richard. And a big thanks for the donation! When we were hashing out which window system that we wanted to use in Peach the choices came down to Mate and XFCE. What ultimately gave XFCE an edge boiled down to two very important factors. XCFE is the lightweight among all the window managers and we wanted our system to run as fast as possible on anything. XFCE is not short on features by any means either. It is highly customizable and we tweaked it a bit to give it even more capabilities. There are a few tutorials around the web for XFCE. You might try these.
